The YMCA’s new entrance is the centerpiece of a large facility renovation, reconstruction and redevelopment, driven to transition this historic property into the 21st Century. This ambitious project included the acquisition and demolition of two neighboring abandoned apartment buildings to make way for a new High Street entrance, parking lot, and a new 4-story, 32-unit affordable residential housing facility. The result was a reorientation of the facility’s primary access point to a new Main Entrance facing High Street. This reorientation opened up large portions of the existing facility for new use, and now provides convenient on-site parking. Large portions of the existing facility were completely renovated, made code compliant, and are now fully accessible. The original 1926 therapy pool was completely replaced with a new pool and the Greater Portland YMCA regained its stature as one of Portland’s best, and most inviting non-profit organizations.
