A thoughtful civic renovation that modernizes Bangor City Hall for accessibility and efficiency while preserving the historic character of a landmark public building.

Originally constructed in 1913 as a Renaissance Revival federal building, Bangor City Hall underwent a comprehensive interior renovation to improve accessibility, modernize building systems, and create a more efficient and cohesive layout for public service delivery.

Given the building’s historic significance and civic importance, the project required extensive coordination between the City of Bangor and CWS throughout both design and implementation. Careful planning ensured that modern upgrades were seamlessly integrated while preserving the architectural character of the landmark structure.

The renovation focused on reconfiguring the first floor to consolidate key public-facing departments, including Assessing, City Clerk, Code Enforcement, Economic Development, Planning, Treasury, and the City Council Chambers. New public and staff restrooms, meeting rooms, and a centrally located elevator were added to significantly improve accessibility and user experience.

Building-wide upgrades included a new mechanical system, enhanced security zoning, and infrastructure improvements to support future life-safety enhancements. All work was completed with a strong emphasis on maintaining the building’s historic integrity while adapting it for contemporary civic use.
