The YMCA’s new entrance serves as the centerpiece of a major renovation and redevelopment, transforming this historic property for the 21st century.
This ambitious transformation began with the acquisition and demolition of two neighboring vacant apartment buildings to make way for a new High Street presence. In their place, a new main entrance, on-site parking, and a four-story, 32-unit affordable housing building redefined how the campus is accessed and experienced.
Reorienting the YMCA’s primary entrance to High Street improved visibility and accessibility and unlocked new potential within the existing facility. Large portions of the building were renovated, brought up to code, and made fully accessible, creating flexible space for expanded programming.
The project honored the YMCA’s legacy while modernizing its amenities. The original 1926 therapy pool was completely replaced, ensuring continued service for future generations. Together, these improvements repositioned the Greater Portland YMCA as one of the city’s most welcoming and vital community resources.
